#26 MONEKA BEGUM

Toilet Business Owner
Bangladesh

Years ago, Moneka Begum and her husband ran a modest business but were faced with many challenges that limited their success. Moneka’s husband, once a skilled mason, fell ill, depleting their savings and leaving them in a precarious situation. Undeterred, Moneka decided to take matters into her own hands. With her limited resources, she gathered discarded materials such as bricks, chips, and sand from various development activities in the area and started producing latrine slabs and rings herself. This kept the family afloat, but with only a low quality product, her sales gradually dwindled.

To jump start her business to a higher level, iDE provided her with training on various latrine technologies, marketing strategies, and business expansion methods. She learned the importance of understanding her customers' needs and demonstrating the benefits of her products. But offering more expensive products was a risk so Moneka first ran a test. She cast a slab in ceramic and to her delight it sold within days.

Moneka now has a demonstration area in her production center where customers can see many latrine products and offerings. By taking into account the customer's household type, the expected duration of latrine usage, allocated budget, and the number of family members using the latrine, Moneka can now better identify a customer's needs and market her products accordingly.

What's next for Moneka

Moneka strives to maintain a steady production schedule and to diversify her product range to the different needs of their customers, rather than solely focusing on increasing sales volume. She now believes that producing quality products increases sales and consumer choice, as the product serves as a visible demonstration to potential customers.

"I am currently producing and marketing new models of improved latrines which are contributing to the growth of my business and financial prosperity." — Moneka

iDE was started as a radical idea that business is a solution to move people out of poverty. 40 years later, we still don't give things away. We create long term change by powering entrepreneurs to end poverty for their families and communities.
