Michael has 28 years of professional experience in engineering and international development with specific interests in market development, social enterprise, smallholder agriculture, WaSH, and organizational leadership. Michael has lived and worked in Cambodia off and on for 25 years, the last 14 as leader for iDE’s impressive achievements in improving rural incomes and livelihoods. A Canadian citizen, Michael decided while studying as an engineer that he wanted to work in a foreign country and focused his studies on Water Resources Engineering as something that would be useful in that context. His first overseas posting was as a three-year volunteer term as an irrigation engineer in rural Cambodia, an experience that was personally and professionally transformative. He went on to earn a Master’s degree from Cornell University. In 2000, he started with iDE as Executive Director of iDE Canada and, in 2002, moved into the role of Country Director in Cambodia. During his career, he has emphasized the integration of engineering, social, and market factors. He has been married to his wife, Sreyhem, for 22 years and they have three children aged 14 to 20. In his spare time, he enjoys architecture and interior design. Michael says, “The successes that we have found in Cambodia have come from listening to the customer. They guide us in finding the right products, services, and channels to deliver the benefits that they want and need.”
