Melanie joined iDE as Zambia Country Director in March 2015. She had previously been working as an International Consultant, providing leadership and management in market development, value chain, and financial service development initiatives across Africa. Her clients included DFID, IFAD, Nike Foundation, USAID, New Zealand Aid Programme, iDE, ChildFund, FinMark Trust, Ecorys UK, and Cardno Emerging Markets Group. Her latter work, on public-private partnership (PPP) and “making markets work for the poor” (M4P) program reviews and evaluations, grew out of years of hands-on experience as a technical lead in the financial sector and market-led programming. Her core technical knowledge around access to finance in areas such as market situational analysis, sector deepening, institutional strengthening, and programme design and evaluation has contributed to, and helped shape, appropriate and demand-driven financial services in countries such as Zambia, Malawi, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, Albania, Georgia, Abkhazia, and Kyrgyzstan.
